Tigernuts
Tigernuts (also known as chufas) are a popular ingredient in the fishing bait industry, especially for carp fishing. They are small, knobby, tubers that grow on a type of sedge plant (Cyperus esculentus), and they’ve been used for centuries, both as food (mainly in Mediterranean and African cuisines) and in fishing bait.
Why tigernuts are effective in fishing bait:
Natural Attraction: Tigernuts have a natural sweetness that attracts fish, particularly carp. The flavour and scent are distinct and appealing, making them highly effective for drawing fish into the fishing area.
High Oil Content: They contain a high amount of oil, which leaches into the water, creating a visible scent trail that fish find irresistible. This is especially helpful in attracting fish over longer distances.
Nutrition: Tigernuts are rich in carbohydrates, fibre, and fats, which make them highly nutritious. The nutritional profile appeals to fish, helping to keep them interested in the bait for longer periods.
Durability: When prepared correctly, tigernuts can last for hours in the water without breaking down too quickly. This makes them effective for long fishing sessions or when you need to attract fish over time.
Versatility: Tigernuts can be used in various ways for fishing:
Whole Tigernuts: These can be used as hook baits or as part of a groundbait mix. They’re often soaked or boiled before use to soften them, making them more palatable.
Tigernut Flour: Ground tigernut flour is used in bait-making, especially in boilies and pastes. It adds both sweetness and texture to the bait mix.
Tigernut Extract: The liquid from crushed tigernuts is often added to liquid attractants and groundbait recipes to enhance the scent trail.
Long-Lasting Attraction: Unlike some other baits that break down quickly, tigernuts provide long-lasting attraction due to their slow breakdown in water. This helps maintain fish interest for extended periods.
Easily Digestible: Tigernuts are easy for fish to digest and do not cause bloating or discomfort, which can sometimes happen with other bait types. This makes them a safe and healthy option for the fish.
